Dear players, coaches, volunteers, referees and spectators,

As we strive to uphold the highest levels of sportsmanship both on and off the pitch, it is vital that each of us show respect for the officials. Referees are essential to the game, and they deserve the same respect and consideration we all desire. Referees are there to ensure the game is fair and safe for all players, and without them, the game would not be the same.

This season has seen a number of reports of unacceptable behaviour towards referees and Munster Rugby would like to re-iterate that there is a zero tolerance stance for abuse or harassment towards officials. Fines of up to €5000 and bans upwards of 5 years for participation have been handed out to clubs and individuals for incidents this year and this level of sanction will continue next season.

Referees are like so many other volunteers in the game. They generously give their time to help others enjoy the sport. Any behaviour that does not comply with the high standards that all of us in the Munster Rugby family live by and expect, will not be tolerated.

I would like to remind all clubs and schools that as per Article 16 of the Munster Rugby rules and regulations that the following sanctions may be applied in the case of an abuse of an official.

(i)Imposition of fine (ii)Requirement to replay the match at such time and at such venue as is thought fit (iii)Granting of the points in leagues or forfeiture of match in cups or knockout stages of competitions (iv)Loss of as many points in league competitions as may be determined (v)Expulsion of the club from the competition (vi)Loss of tickets (vii)Such other penalty or sanction as may be deemed appropriate

The onus is on you as club officials and officers to ensure that all members and supporters of your club treat match officials with respect.
